Textile Simulation and material

Project Overview
This is a self-initiated studio project by Haraay Design Studio, Pune a concept 3D fabric video exploring textile simulation, drape physics, and material rendering. Fabric is one of the genuinely difficult problems in 3D: it deforms continuously, responds to gravity and motion, and interacts with light in ways that expose any shortcut immediately. We undertook this study to push our simulation and material capability beyond what commercial deadlines usually allow.

Our Approach
Haraay approached this as material research first and film second. The work involved building accurate weave structures, tuning simulation parameters against real fabric behaviour, and developing shader setups that handle subsurface light transmission and sheen correctly. Camera and lighting were then designed to showcase the material properties slow, controlled movement that lets the fabric's weight and drape become the subject rather than a backdrop.

Fabric deforms continuously in response to gravity, motion, and contact, and it interacts with light in complex ways transmitting, scattering, and reflecting differently depending on weave and fibre. Any inaccuracy in weight or drape reads as wrong immediately, even to viewers with no technical knowledge.
Apparel and textile visualisation, fashion e-commerce, virtual sampling, furniture and soft furnishing visualisation, and advertising where physical shoots are impractical. It allows garments and textiles to be visualised before production, reducing sampling cost and time to market.
