10 Rules for Geart Branding & Design
Developing a distinctive creative style and voice is key to standing out in a crowded field. It sets you apart, makes your work unforgettable, and positions you as desirable in the job market. But let’s be real, finding your style doesn’t happen overnight. It took me years to even begin shaping mine, and it’s still evolving. Some of the most iconic creatives spent decades discovering theirs, so don’t sweat it if you’re not there yet. Your creative voice will naturally reflect your personality, inspirations, memories, and life experiences. I’ve outlined six steps that helped me shape my own style and voice, hopefully, they’ll help you too.

Creative Exposure
Dive into diverse inspirations beyond your field, film, music, art, photography, fashion, design, and more. Collect things that resonate emotionally or aesthetically, whether through a digital mood board, scrapbook, or diary. Over time, patterns will emerge, revealing what truly speaks to you.
These insights often align with your passions, key experiences, or emotions. Keep tracking your evolving tastes, this evolution will be a fascinating reflection of your creative journey.
Learn the Rules
Master the history and contemporary landscape of your craft. This foundation helps you create work that’s truly original, not just derivative of others. Study the greats, past and present. Learn their philosophies, techniques, and influences.
In the early stages, copying their work (for practice, not profit) can be a powerful way to internalize the rules of your field.
Create Your Own Rules
Set quirky creative boundaries for yourself, they’re the building blocks of a recognizable style. The more unique your rules, the more distinct your work. Dr. Seuss, for example, limited himself to a specific number of words, giving his stories their unmistakable charm.
Create without fear of failure, this is where innovation lives. Try painting with natural tools like rocks
Find Your Voice
Your creative voice is rooted in what makes you you. What sparks your passion, joy, or even anger? What’s your story beneath the surface? Explore these questions through journaling.
Apply this concept to your medium: create a design with only dollar-store items, paint without brushes, or craft fashion pieces
Break the Rules
Once you’ve learned the rules, break them. Experiment with unconventional tools, materials, and methods. Create without fear of failure, this is where innovation lives. Try painting with natural tools like rocks
Write down your experiences, emotions, and memories. These deeply personal insights can translate into work that feels authentic and connects with your audience on a meaningful level
Share Your Voice
Once your work starts feeling like you, share it. Post on social platforms like Instagram, Behance, or Dribbble, and see how people respond. Not every project will go viral, but over time, you’ll learn what resonates with others, and with yourself. Keep creating, keep sharing, and refine as you go. Persistence is everything.
